Day Seven

Today was a relaxing day of shopping, eating and packing for Cusco.

We started at 10 and headed to the Inca Markets.  There are rows and rows of shops and haggling is expected.  Wait until you see all of the cool things they bought from Alpaca slippers and ponchos and sweaters and shirts to really cool bags and back packs. 




Then we headed to Wong's, the big Supermarket in Lima, in case anyone wanted to buy candies or chocolate or coffee!

Then it was time to head to the ocean to eat in a really nice restaurant by the Pacific.  A great way to end our stay in Lima.







This looks like a really cool twinkie, but it really is molded mashed potatoes with chicken salad on top. 



This is an Amazonian rice dish with candied nuts and chicken and pork.




This, is an amazing chocolate caramel cake!































Then it was back to the hotel to pack for Cusco! 

The bus rolls at 3 am so hopefully everyone is packed and asleep!

Tomorrow's blog will be from about 12,000 ft. in the Andes Mountains.

Day Four Today got started again at nine, as we headed on the bus to Collique, Perú.  This is where the organization that Dr. Campos founded: Operacion San Andres Partnership of Holistic Transformation in Collique, Perú is located.  We arrived and unloaded the bus and went upstairs where we took out our instruments and got ready for the arrival of the kids in the program.  When they came in, 25 in the first group, we had a small group play for them, and then we showed them the difference between the brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments, and what the different sizes of the instruments sounded like.  Then, we had an instrument petting zoo.  They were so excited to be able to touch the instruments!  Then they asked us some great questions about the instruments, before they had to head back to class.  It was so much fun to see my students having a great time talking to and showing their instruments these amazing Peruvian kids....

Day Three Today we got up to eat and leave by nine (some of the peaks of the day from some of the band members were that they got to sleep last night!).  We then traveled to the PUCP, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, to perform for, and give a clinic for their students in the ProJazz Program.  We had a blast.  The students were so receptive to the clinic on rehearsal techniques and then we got to play with them in a combo setting.  You can never go wrong with Autumn Leaves in G minor!  They are some great players and our combo folks really enjoyed playing with them.  It was amazing to watch these students grow and build their jazz vocabulary and performance techniques in a short amount of time.  Literally, the whole room was smiling and nodding each time the students played, because of how quickly they were utilizing the techniques that we discussed.  We made some great new friends today! Hello friends and family of Baylor Jazz. We are in Lima, Peru and tucked in for the night!  We just got to the hotel about 30 minute ago, and everyone is tired, but good!  Dr. Luis Campos met us at the airport and we boarded a bus that took us along some cliffs on the Pacific Ocean.  I'm sure it is beautiful scenery, but it was 1 o'clock in the morning!!!   We didn't see much.  He told us a lot about the days ahead, and we are going to have a really amazing trip. Tomorrow morning is an early one.  7:00 down to breakfast at the hotel and then board the bus at 8:15 to travel to a Presbyterian School.  We are going to play for the students and then find a time to Jam with their high school music students.   We also will give a public performance at the school in the afternoon and then head back to the hotel for a Peruvian meal.  We also found out that the Pan American Games are in Lima this week.  Tomorrow I will make sure...
