Day Two
This morning we woke up early, to get some breakfast at the hotel before heading through Lima. Then we traveled through some CRAZY traffic to our first performance site, the Colegio San Andres, a Presbyterian School for grades pre-k through high school. This is also the school that our host, Dr. Campos attended. After arriving, we warmed up and played about 20 measures of the first tune we were going to play, which happened to be the first time we have played together since April. Time to be pros!
We played two shows at the school in the morning, one for the secondary students and one for the primary students. We also got to perform with their band on some traditional Peruvian songs and we got to listen to their primary school choir sing. It's so amazing how universal music is. Most of us can't speak more than 5 words to each other, but we can sit down and play a concert with other musicians without saying a word.
We got a tour of this amazing school and had a great time meeting all of the students and teachers. Then we ate a great Peruvian meal in their cafeteria. Funny moment of the day, the principal at the school kept asking us if we wanted soap, over and over....do you want soap. After making the universal sign for either eating cereal or ice cream, we realized that she meant SOUP!!!. When Derek, our trombone playing, Spanish speaking, translator told her that was SOAP, she laughed for a long while.
We then boarded the bus to head to the Lima Town Square. There we saw a few Cathedrals, the Building where the President of Lima works, and we explored the church's Catacombs where more than 25,000 bodies were buried. It really is an amazing church.
Then we headed back to the school for a performance for the parents and for the general public. It was so much fun performing with the school's band kiddos, and sharing the stage with the choir once again. It was a great show and one we will remember for a long time. We literally had them up and dancing! And a side note, no matter where you play it, IN THE MOOD always gets the same funny "ahhhhh" sound from the audience when it starts being played.
Their principal after the concert said on the mic that we influenced many lives today. I would also like them to know that they too influenced ours as well. We made some great friends today.
Then it was back to the hotel for a beautiful and tasty meal hosted again by Dr. Campos.
And by now....I bet many of our jazz folks are fast asleep after a long day of travel and very little sleep last night.

Peak and pit of the day appears to be becoming a daily thing for us (tell us your best and worst moments.) It should be fun to see how this develops throughout the week.

Dinner! It was amazing. Beef and potatoes and an Asparagus SOAP. I mean SOUP!
